The dangers of coral reef bleaching are upon us. The rising water temperatures due to global warming are cooking coral reefs and in turn, are eroding their colour and very life. Ecologists are racing to save coral reefs before they are lost forever, and one viable solution is 3D printing.<br />
<br />
Coral reefs are home to algae, zooplankton as well as a variety of sea creatures. Coral reefs help support a quarter of all ocean life as well as helping guard against coastal erosion.  The algae living inside coral supplies nutrients that helps create its vivid colour. Unfortunately radical cuts to carbon pollution will do little to slow their demise as a warming of only 1.5% will put 90% of coral reefs at risk.<br />
<br />
When stressed coral ejects its algae and turns white (coral bleaching.) If this continues for an extended period of time, the coral then dies. Our unusually warm waters have caused mass bleaching worldwide. Adding to this dilemma is carbon pollution which have turned oceans more acidic, making it harder for coral polyps to absorb calcium and become the coral we all know and love.<br />

Baby coral are drawn to healthy white or pink coloured reefs with crevices and holes where they will be safe from being destroyed or eaten by predators. 3D printers are looking to recreate these environmental properties with 3D printed sandstone. Others have 3D printed artificial coral made of calcium carbonate. This coral would slowly dissolve in the reef and in turn make the surrounding waters less acidic.</div>

It took six weeks of testing to get the prosthetic feet just right for Phillip. They used TPE flexible filament which can be stretched up to to twice its original length before returning to it's original form when released. Phillip the duck is getting used to his new 3d printed feet at an animal sanctuary north of Milwaukee.</div>

As nylon absorbs water from the air you must make sure that it is dry before you print. Dry nylon prints smoothly with a glossy finish. When water absorbed nylon is printed, the water in the filament causes air bubbles during printing that prevents good layer adhesion, weakens the part and ruins the surface finish.</div>

Tumbles, a puppy born without his front legs in October this year was rescued by Friends of Shelter Dogs, a non profit organisation, when he was only two weeks old. He learned to walk by using his nose to stabilise himself when walking on his back legs. </div>

Ohio University printed Tumbles a wheelchair to help him get off the ground and use his back legs more naturally. Tumble’s wheelchair roughly took 14 hours to print on a standard consumer printer. A group of physical therapists are helping Tumbles adjust to his new set of wheels. Tumbles will be provided with free wheels for the rest of his life.<br />

Once the Buildtak has been adhered to your printer make sure you level your print bed again to accommodate the extra height the Buildtak adds to your printed (or else the nozzle will scrape along the print bed!) Also, make sure your print is set up with little to no first layer brim/squish or else it will be very hard to remove from the print bed once finished - trust me, we know!</div>

Kapton tape can be used on high print bed temperatures such as 260C. To apply Kapton Tape to your print bed either apply underwater or with a spray bottle so it adheres better. Make sure there are no bubbles under the tape and that there is no overlap of tape when applying. Press the tape down slowly for a bubble free layer. If there are bubbles the tape can be removed and you can try again.</div>

<li><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Buy a quality filament. Sure you can find on eBay cheap filaments but as with everything in life - you pay for what you get. If it is cheap there is usually a good reason.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Make sure your print bed is level. It pays to ensure you a have a level bed and your printhead is the right distance from the bed. Follow your printers instructions. Time spent here will be well rewarded.   </span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Set the Z-gap between your printhead and printbed to your printers instructions.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Check the first few layers. It pays to watch these first few layers as if these do not print properly it is highly likely the rest of the print will have problems. This could result in many hours and much filament  wasted.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Print small parts and not large parts. There is always the temptation to print as big as you can. But if there is a problem the whole part can be wasted. Better to print small parts that can be fused together later as if one part has a problem there is less waste and you will only have to print a small part again.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Maintenance and Cleaning Up. Like any printer - abuse it and it will let you down. It pays to follow the instruction manual and any maintenance procedures as well as to regularly clean your bed with rubbing alcohol. Use <a href="https://www.x3d.com.au/store/category/1813-accessories" target="_blank">Kapton Tape or Buildtak</a> to improve filament adhesion to your bed.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Don't get Tangled! Keep an eye on the filament feed to ensure the filament is not loose on the spool. Again a problem with cheap filaments.</span></li>
